What Makes a Quality Lactation Cookie?

It dawned on me recently, that while I am here at Yummy Mummy Food Company entrenched in the world of Lactation Cookies, that there might be mums or mums-to-be out there who don't know what one is!

I know 8 years ago when I had my baby, I certainly didn't have a clue that there were even foods that contained galactagogue (milk making) benefits!!

Don't be fooled by marketing! A true lactation cookie isn't just a regular cookie. They need to be made full of wholesome ingredients containing plenty of these age old galactogogues, yet still be as natural and unrefined as possible. being healthy and nutritious enough to support the good nutrition that's so important to both you and your baby's health during breastfeeding.

What To Look for When Buying Lactation Cookies?

When buying lactation cookies look out for the following important "milk making" ingredients below otherwise you really are just eating a regular but overpriced cookie.

Oats

Oats are full of dietary fibre which is a wonderful ingredient for breastfeeding and pregnant mothers as they help relieve constipation. They are a great source of essential vitamins such as thiamine, folic acid, biotin and vitamin e. They also have a low glycemic index and help provide longer lasting energy and what new mother doesn't need that?

Linseeds

Aka flaxseeds contain omega 3 essential fatty acids which can help prevent excess biochemicals that the body produces under stress, making them great for busy parents.

Coconut oil

Back in 2012 when we first decided to use coconut oil for these cookies, they were met with so much disdain from food scientists, but the research and knowledge they ad had proved that it was the best ingredient for these cookies as it's dairy free. It's also a medium chain fatty acid containing lauric acid. Mothers milk also contains lauric acid so how great is that for a lactation cookie to also contain it?
Coconut oil is also known for its antifungal, antimicrobrial, and antiviral property's. It's also great for your skin and hair. Supermodel Miranda Kerr says she eats 3 tspns every day to help maintain her glow!

Buckwheat flour

Buckwheat flour is high in lysine, b vitamins, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper. It's also high in fibre and it contains the right essential amino acids. Best of all it's wheat free.

Fennel and fenugreek

Both of these have been used for centuries in many cultures as a galactogogue aid. In India a tea of fenugreek is made for new mothers to drink every morning to assist with milk production.

Of course here at Yummy Mummy Food Company, we did much research while developing our uniquely 100% healthy lactation cookies to ensure they ticked all our boxes and contain all of these ingredients (which are not only formulated by a nutrtionist and a chef to ensure their quality and taste, but they have also been naturopathically approved to help provide new mothers with a nutrient dense but still great tasting cookie to easily assist them in their breastfeeding journey.

They are all wheat, dairy, refined sugar and preservative free so as not to upset the delicate digestive systems of both mums and babies alike.

Enjoying Lactation Cookies

Eating lactation cookies especially inconjunction with beautiful, soothing herbal teas or natural beverages from our Lactation Tea & Beverage range, is a wonderful, nutritious and enjoyable way to help assist you on your breastfeeding journey.

Best of all they can be eaten safely with one hand whilst feeding your precious baby!
