Foods to Help Keep Your Family Well This Winter

During this wintery time of year here in Australia, we’re all always on the lookout for ways to give our immune systems a bit of a boost to fight off the dreaded colds, flu and other lurgies that abound.

There’s no better way to do this than by ensuring the foods you eat will give you all the vitamins and nutrients you need and we’ve also ensured in our Wellness Cookie that you can get some of these great immune boosting ingredients through the snacks you feed your family too!

Our Wellness Cookies contain a truly unique blend of ingredients that you won’t find in any other cookie range here in Australia which utilises kawakawa leaf extract and blackcurrant syrup.

Kawakawa which is a member of the pepper tree family has been used in traditional Maori medicine in New Zealand as a popular treatment for colds, influenza and fever, making the extract from it’s leaves the perfect ingredient for an overall family wellness cookie.

Blackcurrant syrup is the additional wellness promoting ingredient that works together with the Kawakawa extract to really help fight off the winter nasties.

Blackcurrants have a high concentration of:

  • Anthocyanins

Are particularly powerful antioxidants found in many purple or brightly coloured foods which previous research has linked to a variety of health claims, including increased longevity, cardiovascular health, cancer prevention and dementia.

  • Polyphenolic substances

Which are micronutrients with antioxidant activity, that play an important role in preventing and in reducing the progression of diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. They also play an important role as a prebiotic, increasing the amount beneficial bacteria in your gut, which is important for health, weight management, and disease prevention

  • Antioxidants 

Are compounds in foods that seek out and neutralize free radicals in the body that have been linked to a variety of diseases, including heart disease and certain cancers. There’s much Evidence suggests that antioxidant supplements do not work as well as the naturally occurring antioxidants in foods such as fruits and vegetables, especially in blackcurrants).

  • Vitamin C

Is another powerful that helps the body form and maintain connective tissue, including bones, blood vessels, and skin. It can help to repair and regenerate tissues, protect against heart disease, aid in the absorption of iron, prevent scurvy, and decrease total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides. Plus it’s also another powerful antioxidant.

  • Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)

Is a fatty substance found in various plant seed oils and is renowned for its use to help skin conditions in particular but has also been helpful for a range of other health conditions.
